Finland is filled with national parks, each more stunning than the last, and all are definitely worth experiencing.
Koli is undoubtedly one of the most popular national parks in Finland—and for good reason. Beneath the rugged landscapes, the view over Lake Pielinen offers the most magnificent scenery. At Koli, you can find both shorter, easier trails and longer routes suitable for a few nights of camping with varying elevations. This is a place worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.
Salamajärvi National Park is great because it is not nearly as crowded as the previously mentioned Koli. At Salamajärvi, the landscapes vary from forests to ponds and beautifully open treeless marsh areas. The terrain does not have much elevation change, which makes the journey smoother. If you're lucky, you might encounter the majestic forest reindeer, the emblematic animal of Salamajärvi. A true gem of the national park is definitely the wilderness sauna located at Valvatti, which is a must-experience!
Hiking in Lapland is always a great idea. The tranquility, nature, and landscapes are unparalleled in the north, which is why it’s worth taking your time when heading there. Here, you can make day trips or a week-long trek—it's up to you. Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is easily accessible, and there are services available in the area. This is the place to experience the so-called magic of Lapland!
Finland has 41 national parks, so it's very likely that you won't need to drive many hours to reach any of them. Sipoonkorpi National Park is located just a 40-minute drive from Helsinki, making it very easily accessible. While you can stay overnight in Sipoonkorpi, it is more famously known for its excellent day trails. I often visit Sipoonkorpi to test new hiking gear before taking it on longer treks. Here, you can experience the freshness of the coniferous forest!
If you're planning to visit any national park, it's a good idea to check the website luontoon.fi for detailed instructions and announcements regarding trails or national park services. Also, remember to review the principles of "everyman's rights," which you can learn about here. In summary, it's important to always remember the principle when moving in nature: Respect nature - do not alter it.
